Why this matters

Sexual concerns are among the most common reasons people struggle in their relationships and their health, and among the least likely to be treated. In much of the world there is no one trained to help. The Thousand Therapist Project exists to change that by training one thousand clinicians to provide sex therapy in the places that need it most. Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, the School of Sex Therapy is offering 100 full-tuition scholarships for the 2027 cohort to clinicians in underserved communities and in countries where sex therapy training is limited.

The program

A rigorous, systematic program

This is not a weekend workshop. The Certificate in Sex Therapy is a structured thirty-two week program that takes you from the foundations of human sexuality to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of sexual concerns. Every week follows the same disciplined pattern: you read current research, watch a selected lecture or clinical demonstration, pass a quiz on both, and bring it all to a three-hour live class with your cohort.

Learn more about how the program works
  • 96 hours of live teaching. Thirty-two three-hour classes on Zoom, built around case discussion and clinical reasoning. Classes are not recorded.
  • Current research every week. More than 1,300 pages of peer-reviewed articles and clinical chapters, most published in the last three years, including the Fifth International Consultation on Sexual Medicine papers. All readings are provided.
  • 32 module quizzes. Every module ends with a twenty-question quiz on that week's readings and videos. You must score 80 percent or higher on every quiz.
  • 10 written clinical assignments. You diagnose cases and explain how you reached the diagnosis, choose treatment approaches and defend them, and build your own referral network. All written work follows APA format.
  • 8 discussion boards. You test your thinking against your colleagues' on questions the field still debates.
  • The Student Handbook & Workbook. A private, weekly self-of-the-therapist journal in which you examine your own values, bias, transference, and countertransference across the whole year. It ends with a Final Reflective Paper on how you have grown as a clinician.
  • Clear standards. To complete the program you attend at least 26 of the 32 live classes with your camera on, pass every quiz at 80 percent, and earn at least 80 percent overall.

Your path

Your path to certification

  1. STEP 1 · THIS PROGRAM

Complete the Certificate in Sex Therapy

    Thirty-two weeks of education.

  2. STEP 2

    Complete the clinical requirement

300 hours of clinical work with patients, including 50 hours of supervision.

  3. STEP 3

Become an IAPST Certified Psychosexual Therapist

Certification from the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists.

The Certificate in Sex Therapy is the education requirement for IAPST certification, and it is accredited by IAPST. Completing it earns the Certificate. To become certified, you also complete the clinical requirement.

Learn more about certification

IAPST certification has two parts. The education requirement is this program. The clinical requirement is 300 hours of clinical work with patients, including 50 hours of supervision with a qualified supervisor. You complete the clinical requirement alongside or after the program, and you choose where you receive supervision. How the clinical requirement works, and how to log your hours, is explained in detail during the program. The clinical requirement is not included in tuition or the scholarship.

Curriculum

What you will learn

In the first half of the program you build the knowledge every sex therapist works from: anatomy, neurology, psychology, development, diversity, ethics, and the sexual history. In the second half you apply it, learning to diagnose and treat sexual concerns in individuals and couples, and to work with the complex presentations that most clinicians are never taught to handle.
